How to delete old ChatGPT chats but keep the important ones

28 September 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: ChatGPT has no way to select some chats and delete only those. So the job is not really "delete the old ones" — it is "protect the keepers first, then clear everything else". Pin or move the chats you want to survive, export a backup, then delete or archive the rest by age.

Why ChatGPT makes this awkward

ChatGPT gives you exactly two ways to remove a conversation. You can open a chat's menu in the sidebar and delete that one chat, or you can open settings, go to Data controls, and delete everything. There is no checkbox, no multi-select, no "delete everything older than six months".

For a sidebar with two hundred conversations in it, neither option is what you want. One at a time is twenty minutes of clicking. Delete all takes the eight chats you actually cared about along with the other hundred and ninety-two.

That framing is the whole trick. Stop thinking of it as "how do I delete the old ones" and start thinking of it as "how do I make the keepers unmistakable before I clear the rest".

Step 1: decide what "important" means, in ChatGPT's own terms

Before you remove anything, mark the conversations that should survive. ChatGPT has three signals for this, and they are the same signals any cleanup tool can respect:

This step takes ten minutes and it is the one people skip. Everything after it is mechanical.

Step 2: export a backup first

In ChatGPT, open settings, go to Data controls, and choose Export data. You get an email with a download link containing your conversations.

Do this even if you are confident. Deleting a ChatGPT conversation is permanent — it is removed from your account immediately, and OpenAI's support cannot restore it for you. The thirty-day window you may have read about is OpenAI's own retention schedule for removing the data from their systems, not a recycle bin you can open.

The export is the only thing that makes a large cleanup reversible in the sense that matters: you still have the text.

Step 3: pick a method

Option A — archive everything, then bring back what you miss

ChatGPT's settings include an "archive all chats" action. Archiving is not deleting: the conversations leave your sidebar but stay in your account, and you can restore any of them later from the archived list.

This is the safest no-tools approach and it empties the sidebar in one click. The downside is that it is indiscriminate — everything goes, including this morning's chat — and digging a specific conversation back out of a few hundred archived ones is its own chore. It works best if you genuinely want a clean slate and treat the archive as cold storage.

Option B — delete one at a time

Perfectly reasonable under about twenty conversations. Open each chat's menu, delete, confirm. Past that it becomes the twenty-minute clicking exercise, and the risk shifts from "this is slow" to "I stopped paying attention and deleted the wrong one".

Option C — clear by age, with the keepers protected

This is where a browser extension earns its place, and it is what Chat Cleanup was built for: pick everything older than 30, 90, 180 or 365 days, see the exact list of titles, then archive or delete that batch. Pinned chats, Project chats and anything you have marked protected are skipped by the age filters and by Select all, so the keepers from step 1 stay put without you thinking about it.

Whatever tool you choose, insist on two things: it shows you the exact list before it acts, and it excludes your protected chats by default rather than asking you to deselect them one by one. An extension that reads your chat list is worth a minute of scrutiny — see how to check one.

What "old" should mean for you

Age is a crude filter, which is exactly why it works: it needs no judgement about content. Pick the threshold that matches how you use ChatGPT.

A reasonable first run: archive everything older than a year, live with it for a week, then come back and do 90 days. You will discover very quickly that you never went looking for any of it.

What can go wrong

The short version

  1. Pin the essentials, move ongoing work into Projects, rename the rest of the keepers.
  2. Export your data from ChatGPT's settings and wait for the email.
  3. Archive or delete by age — start at a year, work inwards.
  4. Review the exact list before confirming anything permanent.

Ten minutes of preparation turns a scary irreversible operation into a boring one. That is the entire point.

Clean up by age, keep the rest

Chat Cleanup adds multi-select, 30/90/180/365-day filters and a review step to chatgpt.com. Pinned and Project chats are protected by default. Free, no account, no backend.
